I have a sort of love/hate relationship with football. Well, that's a little strong. More accurately, I really enjoy football, but there are elements of it I really despise. I blog about it now and again and it tends to vary in importance in my life. Right now, I'm pretty into it (off to Stamford Bridge on Tuesday) and as such, am feeling argumentative.

Why I love football:

  1. It's great fun to play
  2. It's great fun to watch
  3. It's a social event; both playing and watching
  4. The word alone is a great conversation topic
  5. Fans are passionate
  6. Following a team can bring great enjoyment and an enormous sense of pride.

Why I hate football:

  1. Conversely, following a team can be a heartbreaking and frustrating endeavour at times.
  2. Football fans are (stereotypically) violent, stupid and anti-social.
  3. It's not the cheapest sport to follow. Sky TV, ticket prices, plane tickets for away fixtures, merchandise, etc.
  4. There's far too much money and corruption in it. Not to the mention the inequality in wages.

it's a fairly even argument. However, I'll continue to enjoy football, because it's just one of those things - when you're invested - that you have to follow through the good and bad times.

I'd also like to offer my predictions for the Premier League this season:

  1. Manchester United
  2. Manchester City
  3. Chelsea
  4. Tottenham
  5. Arsenal

It pains me to see Man U come out top again, and despite City's amazing start to the season, I think United will do what they always seem to do and come strong mid-to-late season when good form is needed most. Man City will drop off. Chelsea will remain consistent, but do not have the fortitude to challenge for the title. Tottenham and Arsenal may challenge for third, but in the end I think will settle for 4th and 5th place.
