How to feed a developer

I'm a web developer by trade; concerning myself more with how stuff works, rather than how it looks. It's somewhat of a cliche, but, as with a lot of people, I don't feel I chose my career, it sort of chose me. I simply did what I found interesting. I liked computers, so I did 3 years at University studying them; got myself an internship, followed by a job, and since then haven't really looked back since.

I've never really had what you might call a "long" commute to my place of work. I've had around half a dozen jobs, in some form or another, and the furthest commute I've had has been a combination of a 30-minute walk and 20 minute train ride, when I was down in Southampton. My current commute, since moving to the centre of Brighton at the beginning of this month, now stands at around a 4-minute walk. The shortest, and sweetest yet.

I write this blog entry for several reasons. Firstly, the last time I blogged was the 13th July - well over 2 weeks ago. To say I've become a bit lax is an understatement.

A website was recently brought to my attention - Clients From Hell - the name pretty much says it all. It features snippets submitted by designers who have had the disadvantage of working with less than desirable clients. It's certainly worth a read if you're a designer. I don't often rant about things, but there is a recurring theme throughout the articles that grinds my bones.

The wonderful world of temping

As a follow-up to the 2-week temporary filing work at Sureterm, last week I was back at the company, doing a single day of work. Except this time, I was on the phones. Now to say this type of work is my idea of hell is a little strong, but it's somewhere in the ballpark. I never thought I would ever do this type of job, and suffice to say I don't think I ever will again. I disliked this job for 3 reasons:

  1. I'm not a great fan of telephone conversations in general, as a means of communication.
  2. I am not particularly gifted in the art of "small talk", or "inane chit-chat". I.e. the type of conversation you would have with someone you do not know.
  3. Thirdly, I do not like not knowing what I am talking about. And having to pretend to people I do.

Portfolio Mini-site launch

It's been in a state of almost completion for over a week now, so I think it's time to launch my portfolio mini-site. It won't be of interest to the average reader, but I'm hoping it will help my Internship applications. It's not particularly packed at the moment, but I'm hoping to add to it as I complete more projects.

Starting work on my Portfolio

In addition to this blog, I intended to use this domain name to host a portfolio of my work. To stand a chance of getting any sort of design job, a portfolio is necessary, and this is something I've been lacking. Before the big Macbook meltdown, I had started to put together some initials designs and actually started work on the website. However, I lost enthusiasm after that went down the drain. However, the work must restart!
